The God Who Calls ThingsNot Being as Being, and Who Raises the Dead (2) – Rom 4:18
God Is the God Who Raises the DeadThe God whom Abraham believed in is the God who raises the dead (Rom. 4:17). This means that God can raise the dead. When God called Abraham to offer up Isaac, he experienced this. Abraham obeyed. When Abraham offered Isaac, he believed that God would raise him from the dead (Heb. 11:17-19). He believed that God would raise his son, and that he would receive his son back in resurrection. We need the same faith in the Lord Jesus. We believe that God is the Creator who calls things not being as being. We also believe that He is the Life-giver, the One who can raise the dead. He can create out of nothing, and He can also raise the dead.
We can apply this to the church life. You may feel that the situation in your local church is very poor. Indeed, it is very poor; in fact, it is a state of having nothing. You must say to the Lord, “Lord, come in and call things not being as being.” We must believe in the God who calls things not being as being and who raises the dead. Do not be disappointed by the situation in your locality. Do not say that everything is poor and dead. Such a place is a suitable place for you, and it is also a suitable place for God. Is it poor here? You have the rich God who calls things not being as being. Is it dead here? You have the living God who raises the dead. Your situation gives God an opportunity to come in and dispense life to the dead. Do not complain; call on Him and believe in Him. Do not be disappointed with your family situation. Do not say that your wife is poor or your husband is dead. The more you say your wife is poor, the worse she becomes. The more you say your husband is dead, the worse he becomes. You must declare: “My wife is poor, but my God is not poor. My husband is dead, but my God is not dead. The God I believe in is the God who creates things out of nothing and raises the dead. My God does not raise the living — He raises the dead.”
His Faith Was Accounted as RighteousnessSuch faith is accounted by God as righteousness (Rom. 4:3, 21-22). The more we believe in God in this way, the more we feel that God is pleased with us. This is God’s righteousness accounted to us as the result of our faith. Faith is the living Christ Himself. Christ enters into us to be the One who believes; He is our faith. Therefore, Abraham became the father of faith (Rom. 4:16-17; Gal. 3:7-9, 29). He is the father of those who are not circumcised but have the same faith (Rom. 4:11), and also the father of those who are circumcised and walk in the steps of the same faith (v. 12). Abraham is the father of two groups of people—believing Jews and believing Gentiles. If you believe in the Lord, Abraham is your father. All believers in Christ are his descendants.
Daily Question: Please briefly describe in what matter Abraham believed in God as the One who “raises the dead.” How should we treat a “poor or dead” situation?
