Enjoying God Is the RightWay for Believers to Gather and Serve (3) — Isa. 12:3-4
To deal with this situation, everyone thinks the best solution is to have a gifted person stand up and say, “Thank and praise the Lord! I have a good message here.” Everyone who hears it will surely be pleased. As a result, every Lord’s Day this gifted person gives a good sermon, and the others just come to listen. After listening for one year, two years, ten years, thirty years, the more they listen, the more dead they become; the more they listen, the less they know how to function.
It should not be one person speaking and the crowd listening; rather, everyone should function. However, to function, one must enjoy God as life. This is the right way for believers to gather and serve.
Our Lord is edible and also drinkable. We eat the Lord through the Lord’s word, and we drink the Lord by calling on the Lord’s name. Isaiah 12:3-4 says, “Therefore you will joyously draw water from the springs of salvation…. Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name.” Here calling on the Lord’s name is connected with drinking from the springs of salvation. Drawing water from the springs of salvation is drinking, and the way to drink is to call on the Lord’s name. This shows us that when we call on the Lord’s name, we drink of the Lord.
This kind of drinking also includes eating. For example, when a child drinks milk, that is eating; milk is not only a beverage but also food. We all have the same experience — simply calling on the Lord’s name is not enough; it must be accompanied by the Lord’s word. Sometimes when we call, “Oh, Lord Jesus! Oh, Lord Jesus!” we become so joyful that we use the Lord’s word either to praise, or to worship or to give thanks, such as “You are the bread of life; he who eats You shall live because of You!” In this way, we are both calling on the Lord’s name and enjoying the Lord’s word. Calling is drinking, and enjoying the word is eating. Therefore, calling and pray-reading in this way is both eating and drinking; we have both eating and drinking.
