Eating the Lord by PrayingHis Word – Matt. 4:4
The Lord Jesus is our “vitamin.” He is the plant-bread and also the meat-bread — our supply. How does He supply us? It is through His Word, which we receive into us. His words come out of His mouth as words; once they enter into us, they become Spirit. When these words come back out of us, they are words again; and when they are received into others, they again become Spirit. For example, when I pray, saying, “Lord, You are the bread of life, the bread of life,” I receive this Word. As soon as this Word enters into me, it becomes Spirit. This Spirit is life and becomes my supply. Then I release this supply, this life, this Spirit within me, and it becomes words. When you receive these words, they again become Spirit in you. Therefore, word and Spirit, Spirit and word, are in fact one.
Beloved brothers and sisters, the Bible is the Word of the Lord. To receive the Word is to eat the Lord. That is why we need to read the Bible every day, and even turn what we read into prayer. This is what we mean by “pray-reading the Word of the Lord.” God is Spirit, and the embodiment of this Spirit is the Word. Without the Bible, it would be very difficult for us to know the Spirit or to touch God. God is Spirit, but this Spirit is too vague, mysterious and abstract. Praise the Lord that today this Spirit has become the Word, concretely expressed in one definite book — the Bible — from Genesis to Revelation. No matter what chapter you open, no matter what verse you pray-read, you can touch God. For example, Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” You don’t just read it; you pray, “God! In the beginning — oh, in the beginning, God! Thank You, God, You are the beginning. You are the beginning of all things.” As you pray like this, you will not only receive light, but also supply.
Thank the Lord that He is Spirit, that this Spirit has also become the Word, and that He has given us His name. Now we have the Bible, the Holy Spirit and His name. What is needed is simply that we spend a little time to practically exercise and enjoy Him. It doesn’t require much time — just ten minutes every morning to contact the Lord and enjoy Him.
