The Bread of Life, the Living Bread – John 6:35
What do we eat? I don’t mean physical food that nourishes the body, but spiritual food. Believing in the Lord Jesus is different from religion. Religion teaches man to devoutly bow down to God, but believing in the Lord Jesus is to eat Christ in our spirit. Saying “eat Christ” may sound unpleasant, but in the Bible, the Lord Jesus compares Himself to many kinds of food.
In John chapter 6, He repeatedly says that He is the bread of life (John 6: 35, 48 & 51). He also says that those who eat Him will live because of Him (John 6:57). “Live because of Him” is better translated as “live through Him” or “live by Him.” The Lord is the bread of life, and those who eat Him live through Him, live by Him. By calling Himself the bread of life, the Lord shows that if we are to gain His benefit, there is no other way except by eating Him. If you place the bread of life in front of you, no matter how much you admire or praise it, it will not profit you. But if you stop admiring and praising, and instead practically take a few bites, you will receive the benefit. Bread is not for admiration — it is for eating.
To “eat Christ” may sound crude and unpleasant, but the Lord Jesus came precisely to be our bread. He is the bread of life, not for us to admire, but for us to eat, to be the strength for our daily living and actions. Just as a car needs fuel to run — without fuel it cannot move — we need Christ as our food to live.
The Lord Jesus said that He is the bread of life, and those who eat Him will live because of Him. The word “bread” here in the original text is literally “loaf,” so the bread of life is the loaf of life. According to Jewish custom, this bread would surely be made of wheat. Yet, remarkably, the Lord says this bread is His flesh. He said, “For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him” (John 6:55–56). This is truly marvelous. Bread comes from plant life — made of wheat — but here the bread is also flesh. This shows us that the words of the Lord Jesus are not simple and are not easy to understand.
