Isaac’s Experience – Grace and Enjoyment (5) — Gen. 25:21

Obtaining a Suitable Bride

We have seen that Isaac enjoyed all the wells. Wherever he went, he had a well for his enjoyment. Besides enjoying the wells, Isaac also obtained a suitable bride (Gen. 24:61-67). He did nothing to obtain her. While he was meditating in the field, she came to him. Isaac was not a man who did things; he was a man who enjoyed. His father and servant did everything for him so that he could obtain a bride. Isaac did not even go to Rebekah; rather, Rebekah came to him. Isaac obtained Rebekah simply by meditating in the field, not by any deed of his own. This is enjoyment.

Obtaining Twin Sons

After Isaac married, he had no children for twenty years; but after twenty years, he obtained twin sons (Gen. 25:20-21, 26a). Had God not promised that through Isaac, Abraham’s only heir, all the nations of the earth would be blessed? If Isaac had no son, how could this promise be fulfilled? And if this promise were not fulfilled, how could God’s purpose be accomplished? Therefore, not only did Isaac need a son, but God also needed offspring born from Isaac. Because Isaac had not seen this for twenty years, God did nothing. God had a need and wanted to do something about it, but He needed man’s cooperation. For twenty years Isaac simply enjoyed himself and gave no thought to needing a son. However, after twenty years, he came to know that he had this need and understood that his need aligned with God’s need. Once he understood this, he prayed and God answered his prayer.

We are the same today. When we understand that our need aligns with God’s need and pray accordingly, God will answer our prayers. In reality, when He answers our prayers, He is fulfilling His own purpose. Our need must be God’s need, and our prayer for our need should also be a prayer for God’s need. When our need aligns with God’s need and we pray for our need, God’s need is also met. When Isaac prayed for a child, whose need was greater — Isaac’s or God’s? Of course God’s need was greater. Nevertheless, God’s greater need could only be met within Isaac’s lesser need. Only when man understands his need and prays for it does God have a way to come in and meet His need. God has a purpose, and we have a need that aligns with God’s purpose. But God cannot do anything until we understand our need and pray for it — then God will answer our prayers, supply our needs, and accomplish His purpose. In the end, Isaac received a son — Jacob — who not only met Isaac’s need but also accomplished God’s eternal purpose. From Jacob came Christ, and Christ brought in the church, the kingdom and the New Jerusalem. All these eternal things came forth through the fulfilling of Isaac’s need, which aligned with God’s need.

Enjoyment is our destiny, and wherever we go there is a well. But in our enjoyment of God’s grace, we must add our human cooperation so that His eternal purpose may be accomplished through us.

Daily Question: How is God’s purpose accomplished? What role does our prayer play?
