The Characteristics of Isaac – 1 John 1:16-17

In Abraham, we see the spiritual characteristics of being called by God, living by faith, being justified by faith, and having fellowship with God. In Isaac, we see that his characteristic is that of inheriting. Everything was given to him by his father; it was not something he produced himself. Abraham traveled over mountains and rivers to reach the land of Canaan, but Isaac was born in the land of Canaan. Although Abraham was blessed and became great, he also suffered quite a bit. Isaac, however, enjoyed everything; the Bible does not record that he suffered much, but rather reveals that he was always at rest, which is proven by his meditation in the field. If we read Isaac’s history carefully, we will find that wherever he lived, there was a well for his enjoyment; the well signifies that he enjoyed the fountain of water. He also obtained a suitable bride (Gen. 24:61-67) and obtained twin sons (25:20-21, 26). He was a person of enjoyment, always enjoying the supply of grace. Enjoyment was his destiny. He was born of grace, grew up in grace, obeyed in grace, and became an heir in grace, inheriting everything from his father. Everything in Isaac’s life was enjoyment and reception. His life was a life of rest and enjoyment.

What is grace? Grace means enjoyment. The New Testament tells us that grace came through Jesus Christ (John 1:17). Although Christ has come, and grace has come with Him, and we have been brought into this grace in which we stand, the greatest obstacle to this grace is ourselves. Therefore, before we can have the experience of Isaac, we need to represent the first aspect of life experience—Abraham. Abraham’s life reveals that if we want to enjoy God’s grace and fully enjoy the riches of God, we must be dealt with, circumcised, and removed. We must first have the experience of Abraham to have Isaac’s inheritance of grace. We must first remove the self to enjoy grace. However, if there is only Abraham and no Isaac, we will feel discouraged. But all of Abraham’s negative experiences were for Isaac’s positive enjoyment. Abraham’s suffering was for Isaac’s benefit. We are not only Abraham, experiencing God’s calling, living by faith, removing the flesh, and having fellowship with God. We are also Isaac, learning to do nothing, but enjoying Christ coming from God to us, to be our grace and supply. Today, grace is God working Himself into us to be our enjoyment. This grace is the Triune God Himself, now dwelling with our spirit, living in our spirit, to be our enjoyment, causing us to enjoy God as our life and everything, and even as our living.

Daily Question: What is the greatest characteristic of Isaac’s life? How is it different from Abraham?
