The Characteristics of Rebekah – 2 Cor. 11:2a

The old servant knew that Rebekah was the woman God had prepared for him, so he took a gold ring and two gold bracelets and gave them to the woman. He asked whose daughter she was and if there was room in her house for them to stay. The woman immediately answered that she was the daughter of Bethuel, the son of Nahor, and that they had enough straw and fodder, and also a place to stay. The old servant bowed his head and worshipped God, praising God’s lovingkindness and faithfulness for leading him to his master’s kinsman’s house. Rebekah brought the old servant home, and her brother Laban immediately received the guest warmly. The old servant explained his mission, and Laban and Bethuel knew that this was from Jehovah, so they promised to let the servant take Rebekah back, and blessed Rebekah, saying, “Our sister, may you become thousands of myriads, and may your seed possess the gate of those who hate them.” So the servant took Rebekah and returned to the land of Canaan. Toward evening, Isaac came out to meditate in the field, and lifted up his eyes and saw that some camels were coming; it turned out to be the servant bringing Rebekah back. The servant told Isaac all that he had done, and Isaac brought Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent and took her as his wife, and loved her. Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death (Gen. 24:22-67).

Rebekah had several characteristics that we can learn from. First, she was pure and simple, and also kind and diligent. When Abraham’s servant asked for water, she immediately gave him a drink and also drew water for his camels. For a young woman, this was arduous work, but Rebekah did it. Rebekah was also absolute and obedient. Although she had never seen Isaac, she was willing to go to him without hesitation. When she saw Isaac and learned who he was, she took her veil and covered herself; this became a sign of her subjection. Furthermore, Rebekah’s father and brother, Bethuel and Laban, were also those who feared the Lord and were hospitable. Ultimately, Isaac’s marriage fulfilled God’s purpose. On one hand, we are all the “Rebekah” of today. At a time we did not expect, the Spirit came to us, causing us to begin to love the Lord from deep within. Because we have a response to God within us, satisfying His desire, it shows that we have been chosen to become the bride of Christ. We also should be like Rebekah—pure, simple, kind, diligent, and absolutely obedient to the Lord.
