The Love of Christ — Eph. 3:14-19

In Ephesians chapter 3, the love of Christ is presented in a way that speaks to the heart of a learner. Paul was a highly educated man; would he have made grammatical errors or written incoherently? Those who have studied the New Testament in the original language observe that the grammar in Paul’s epistles is profound and sophisticated. However, in Ephesians chapter 3, when speaking of the love of Christ, Paul’s grammar breaks down; what he wrote does not conform to standard Greek usage. He pauses after writing “to comprehend with all the saints the love of Christ” (the words “what is” do not appear in the original text) and suddenly lists four dimensions: “breadth, length, height and depth.” It appears as though there is no connection to the surrounding context. Brothers and sisters, this reveals the true nature of Christ’s love. At this point, Paul was at a loss for words; he could only exclaim: “Oh, the breadth! The length! The height! The depth!” He found it impossible to describe. If someone were to attempt to write about the love of Christ using the finest rhetoric, the understanding conveyed to others would fall woefully short of the reality. When we contemplate the love of Christ, our intellect seems of no use; we truly do not know what to say.

The word “know” here has the same meaning as “measure”. The love of Christ is unmeasurable, yet measurable As we go through each day on earth, we are to learn something of the length, breadth, height and depth of Christ’s love. One day, a preacher felt a sense of oppression while attempting to deliver a sermon — finding himself unable to speak — so he asked the congregation to pray. As everyone prayed, an Africa-American kept repeating the words, “Precious Jesus!” The preacher listened to him say this for over an hour. Afterward, the preacher said, “I have no sermon to deliver today; yet, I heard one phrase in the prayers — “Precious Jesus!’”

Compelled by the love of Christ, though we have not seen Him, we love Him. Through faith, we know that He is precious.

Message Main Points: The love of Christ is broad, long, high and deep — surpassing what man can measure — and yet it is something we can experience and know day by day. We need to comprehend this boundless love together with all the saints, allowing Christ to make His home in our hearts more fully, and be filled with all the fullness of God.

Dally Prayer: Lord Jesus, make Your home in my heart more fully, that I may be rooted and grounded in Your love. Lead me to experience and know, together with all the saints, Your love that is broad, long, high, and deep, that I may treasure You more day by day and be filled with all the fullness of God. Amen.
