The Love of Christ — Rom. 8:35-39
Romans 8:35-39, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 and Ephesians 3:14-19 these three passages of Scripture share one identical phrase: “the love of Christ”. Although the Bible speaks many times of the love of Christ, it is clear that when it comes to “the love of Christ”, there are only these three passages. All the rest speak of the love of God. In truth, the love of Christ is the love of God. As we just read, Romans 8:35 says, “Who will separate us from the love of Christ?” and the conclusion in verse 39 says that nothing “shall be able to separate us from the love of God.” This shows that the love of Christ and the love of God are one. However, what I want to speak of today is the love of Christ toward three kinds of men.
Every believer in this world has their own unique experiences, specific hardships and particular circumstances. Paul’s point is that, whatever your problem may be, the answer is always the love of Christ. Even if you face a hundred different difficulties, the solution to them all is the love of Christ. Some believers may encounter tribulation, others deep distress, persecution or hunger. Even nakedness, danger or the sword — none of these can separate us from the love of Christ, for His love is capable of resolving all such things. Do you realize that when people are grasped by the love of Christ, they are able to endure and overcome what others cannot?
There was a widow whose husband had died, and her life was extremely difficult; she had no way to pay the rent she owed, and she had was pawned all she had. But in such circumstances she still had a smile on her face. When did she smile? It was when she looked at her child, not yet a year old. She smiled because of her love.
I treasure the words of Romans 8:37 especially, “we overwhelmingly conquer.” It is *in* all these things, not apart from them. Indeed, a literal translation of the original text would be “in the midst of all these things.” It is in the midst of all these things that we are able to be more than conquerors. If these things did not come upon us, there would be no need for overcome. Many people imagine that conquer means an absence of tribulation, distress, persecution and the like. Yet God’s Word declares that we are already more than conquerors *in* all these things. It is the love of Christ that enables you to triumph over every tribulation, distress, persecution, famine and danger. The love of Christ is a power that empowers you to overcome them all. These experiences are bitter in themselves, but because you have tasted the love of Christ, you do not perceive them as bitter.
Message Main Points: No tribulation, distress, persecution, hunger, danger or any circumstance can separate us from the love of Christ. The love of Christ does not spare us from all difficulty but causes us to overwhelmingly conquer in the midst of it all; tasting the love of Christ gives us the strength to go through environments we could otherwise not endure.
Dally Prayer: Lord Jesus, whatever circumstance I face today, cause me to firmly believe that nothing can separate me from Your love. Let me taste more of Your love in the midst of all things, so that Your love becomes my strength, that I may overwhelmingly conquer through You. Amen.
