The Heart Must Be Open (2)– 2 Cor. 4:6
Although all of God’s children have a Bible, the enlightenment they receive from it is not the same for each of them. Some seem to have no understanding of the Scriptures at all; some receive a little light when reading; while others are filled with light as they read. The difference lies not in the Bible but in the readers themselves. God’s light is the same, yet people are not the same. Some are open before God, so they can truly read the Bible. Others are closed before God, so they cannot read it. If a person is completely closed, his darkness will also be complete. If he is partially closed, the light he receives will also be partial. No matter to what degree we are unable to see before God — whether great or small, total or partial — it proves that there is darkness within us. Therefore, never think that being unable to read the Bible properly is a small matter. Failing to read the Scriptures well reveals a serious fact: this person is living in darkness! If a person continually reads God’s Word yet never understands it or sees light, that is a very serious condition.
Now we may ask: what does it mean to be open toward God? This openness must come from an unconditional and unreserved consecration. Being open to God is not a temporary attitude; it is a disposition before Him. Openness is not a one-time act — it is continual. For a person to be open toward God, he has to begin with a consecration that is absolute and without reservation. When one’s consecration to God is complete and absolute, his attitude toward God will naturally have no reservation; there will be no area in him that is closed. Any area of closedness indicates incomplete consecration. All darkness comes from being closed, and all closedness comes from un-consecration. Wherever a person has not consecrated himself, that is where he will hold back. Wherever he cannot submit to God, that is where he will defend himself — and that is precisely where he will be unable to understand the truth of the Bible. When he encounters that issue, he will go in circles. Thus, darkness comes from closure, and closure comes from un-consecration. All darkness comes from closure, and all closure comes from un-consecration and unwillingness to submit before God.
