The Heart Must Be Open (1)– 2 Cor. 3:18
The Bible is the Word of God, filled with His light. But this light only shines upon those who are open to Him. 2 Corinthians 3:18 says: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord…” To behold the Lord with an unveiled face is the basic condition for being enlightened by His glory. If a person comes before the Lord with a veiled face, the glory cannot shine upon him. God’s light can only shine upon those who are open to Him. If one is not open before God, there is no way for him to receive God’s light. The problem for some people is that they are closed before God — their spirit is closed toward God, their heart is closed toward God, and their will is closed toward God, their mind is closed toward God. Therefore, the light of the Scriptures cannot shine upon them. This is like the sun, which is full of light and shines upon the whole world. Yet if we sit inside a house and shut all the doors and windows, the light cannot come in to brighten us. The problem is not with the light itself — it is with man. Light can only shine upon those who are open to it.
So it is with spiritual light as with physical light. Whenever we close ourselves, the light cannot shine. Some people remain closed before God and therefore never see His light. We should not spend all our effort merely on reading the words of the Bible; we must also pay attention to whether we are open before God. If one does not behold the Lord with an unveiled face, the glory of the Lord cannot shine upon him. If a person’s heart is not open toward God, God cannot cause him to see the light.
Those who open themselves to the light will be illuminated by it; the more open they are, the more light shines. This is an unwavering law. Even if we close all the doors and windows in a room, as long as there is a crack in between, light will still shine in. Therefore, obtaining light is not difficult; as long as we follow this law, we can have light. On the contrary, if one violates the law of light, he will never receive it. A person who is closed toward God, no matter how much he studies or prays, is still unable to read the Bible. Without being open to God, it is very difficult for man to hope to receive enlightenment. God’s light is not given to man unconditionally. To receive God’s light, man must fulfill the conditions for receiving it.
