The Lord’s Words Are Spiritand Life (1) – John 6:63
1 Corinthians 15:45 says very clearly that the Lord Jesus, who became flesh, after His resurrection, became the life-giving Spirit through resurrection. Because He is the life-giving Spirit, He can be our life and our life supply. When we receive Him — the crucified and resurrected Savior — the life-giving Spirit enters into us, imparting eternal life to us.
In John 6, the Jews could not understand how the Lord could give them His flesh to eat. They thought the Lord meant His physical flesh. They did not understand His words correctly, and to them, His words were very hard. At that moment, the Lord said, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.” In other words, He was telling them that He would become the Spirit. He would not remain in the flesh but would be transformed in form from the flesh into the Spirit. Thus, in John 6:63 He explained that He was not giving them His physical flesh to eat, for the flesh — human flesh — profits nothing. Ultimately, what He would give man is the life-giving Spirit, which is Himself in resurrection.
What kind of Christ have you received? Have you received Christ in the flesh, or Christ as the Spirit? The apostle Paul said that although some once knew Christ according to the flesh, they no longer know Him in that way (2 Cor. 5:16). Now they know Christ as the Spirit (2 Cor. 3:17). Before the Lord’s death and resurrection, He was in the flesh; but after His death and resurrection, He was transformed in form from the flesh into the Spirit (1 Cor. 15:45). Therefore, the Christ we receive today is not Christ in the flesh, but Christ as the Spirit.
Today we do not need to contact the Lord outwardly. Because He is the Spirit, we can contact Him inwardly as the Spirit. He is the life-giving Spirit. Since He is the Spirit, we can receive Him, eat Him and take Him as our food.
