The Type of the Burnt Offering (1) — Gen. 8:20
Offering Christ to God Is Signified by the Sacrifice; Passing through the Cross Is Signified by the Altar
After those who had experienced resurrection stepped out of the ark to begin a new life, what did they do? The first thing they did after leaving the ark was to build an altar and offer sacrifices to God (Gen. 8:20-22). The first thing in the church life should not be work, but offering Christ to God through the cross. Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices to God (Gen. 8:20). Both the altar and the offering are types: the altar is a type of the cross of Christ, and the offering is a type of the various aspects of Christ. We must offer Christ to God in every aspect; we must offer to God the Christ we have experienced. If what we experience of Christ is a burnt offering, we need to bring this very Christ and offer Him to God. God wants us to bring Christ to Him. When we experience Christ and bring the Christ we have experienced to God, this I what pleases Him. We must offer Christ to God so that God may be satisfied. In the church life, we must pay attention to this matter. We need to learn how to experience Christ, bring Him to God, and enjoy Him together with God — this is what God will accept.
We offer Christ to God through the cross. Do not work – go to the cross. Do not try to do anything or to behave – go to the cross. What will the cross do with you? It does only one thing: it will cross you out. Before you do anything for the Lord, you should go to the cross and let it cross you out. Do you want to work for God? Before working for Him, you must come to the cross and be crossed out. In the end, there is no natural work, service or behavior. After you have passed through the cross, only Christ remains. Such a Christ is the a sweet savor offered to God.
Satisfying God
When we, through the cross, offer to God the Christ we have experienced, God is satisfied. We must all be cross out at the altar so that we can offer up the Christ we experience in our daily life. We are continually being crossing out, and we are continually experiencing Christ, bringing Him to God, and sharing Him with one another in the presence of God. Whenever we gather in this way, we are assured that God is satisfied. How do we know that God is satisfied? Because we are satisfied. When you are hungry, God is surely hungry too. When you are unhappy, God is also unhappy. The more you work by yourself, the less satisfied you become; the more you try to do well on your own, the more thirsty and hungry you feel. However, once you have been crossed out on the cross and have fully experienced Christ, you become full, joyful and satisfied. You will say, “Hallelujah! I am full, I am satisfied, I have peace, I have food and drink. I have everything”. This is the sign that God has been satisfied.
Message Main Points: The church life is not a matter of working for God, but of experiencing Christ through the cross and offering the Christ we have experienced to God. The cross crosses out our natural man and ability, so that Christ becomes the sweet savor offered to God. The more we experience and offer Christ, the more God is satisfied, and the more joy and peace we have.
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, make me to experience the cross more, and not to work for You by my natural ability. Let me experience and enjoy Christ every day, offering Christ to God so that He may be satisfied, and that I too may be full of joy and peace. Amen.
