Melchizedek as a Type of Christ as the Great High Priest (1) — Heb. 7:3, 23, 25
I. A Priest Perpetually (Heb. 7:3, 23, 25)
According to Christ’s work and ministry, there is a transition in Hebrews from earth to heaven. Through the end of chapters 1 through 6, the primary revelation concerns Christ’s work on earth, typified by the Aaronic priesthood. Beginning from chapter 7, the book unveils Christ’s ministry in the heavens according to the order of Melchizedek. This section is the consummating word, showing us how the heavenly Christ fulfills His ministry in the heavenly tabernacle. His purging of sins is typified by Aaron’s work, while His sitting at the right hand of the Majesty on high is according to the order of Melchizedek. What Aaron’s work typified — His work on the cross on earth — is for the forgiveness of our sins. His ministry on the heavenly throne is for supplying us and enabling us to overcome sin. His cross saves us out of Egypt; His throne brings us into Canaan. The Hebrew believers had already partaken of His work on the cross; now they must press on to enjoy His ministry on the throne.
In Genesis, all significant figures have genealogies, yet Melchizedek alone has none. In the divine writings, the Holy Spirit sovereignly chose not to record his beginning of days or end of life, so that he might rightly typify Christ as the eternal One — the great High Priest perpetually.
This is just as the Gospel of John presents: the Son of God is eternal, without genealogy (John 1:1); but as the Son of Man, Christ has a genealogy (Matt. 1:1-17; Luke 3:23-38).
“Save forever” may also be rendered: save completely, save perfectly, save fully, save to the uttermost, save unto eternity.
Christ as our great High Priest intercedes for us and takes up our cases. He appears before God on our behalf, praying for us, so that we may be saved and be fully brought into God’s eternal purpose.
