Isaac’s Natural Weakness and Natural Life (6) — Gen. 27:1-4

Isaac’s Life Was Not Very Mature

Isaac had some measure of life maturity, but not very much. Although he blessed, it was a blind blessing (Gen. 27:21-29). His blessing was according to his own natural preference (Gen. 27:1-4). When he blessed, not only were his physical eyes blind, but his spiritual eyes were also blind, because he was veiled by his natural preference. Yet he did indeed bless in faith (Heb. 11:20). He had said that his soul would bless, but in the end it was not his soul that blessed — it was his spirit that blessed. His blessing also became a prophecy. No one can prophesy in the soul. If we want to prophesy, we must be in the spirit. So Isaac truly blessed in the spirit by faith.

Faith is not based on what we are, but on what we see. Whenever you exercise faith, you should not look at yourself, what you are, or your circumstances. You must look at what God is and what He has said. Then you can exercise your faith in God and in His word. This is how Isaac blessed in faith. According to his condition, he was not qualified to have faith. But he did not consider what he was; he looked away from himself to God and God’s promises, and in faith blessed his sons in the spirit. If we want to have faith, we must not look at ourselves; for if we look at ourselves, faith will disappear. Look to God, see what He has said, and then simply say what God has already said. This is faith. This is how Isaac blessed his sons.

Full of Days, Isaac Died in Faith

Although the Bible does not suggest that Isaac was very spiritual, he did not die in a miserable condition. He was full of days and died in faith (Gen. 35:28-29). This is evidenced by his sons burying him in the cave of Machpelah, together with his wife Rebekah (Gen. 49:30-32). Before he died, he must have instructed his sons to bury him in the cave of Machpelah, the place where Abraham and Sarah were buried. This proves that Isaac had Abraham’s faith.

Daily Question: Why do we say that Isaac’s life was not very mature at the end? In what specific event is this shown?
