Living in a Resurrection Life(1) – Gen. 8:4-5
Noah and his family passed through the flood in the ark, and we have seen that passing through the flood is a New Testament type of baptism. After the flood, the ark rested on Mount Ararat (Gen. 8:4). This is a type, shadow and figure of Christ’s resurrection. According to the Bible, the ark typifies Christ. The ark passing through the flood signifies Christ passing through death under God’s judgment, and the ark resting on the mountaintop signifies Christ resurrecting from the waters of death.
Scripture is marvelous. Genesis 8:4 says the ark rested on Mount Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. By carefully studying the Bible along with Hebrew references and historical background, we discover that when Israel kept the Passover in Egypt, they changed the seventh month into the first (Exo. 12:2). The Jews have two calendars: a civil calendar and a sacred calendar. The former is the old calendar; the latter is the new calendar, which begins with the first Passover. In God’s eyes, the Passover marked a new beginning of life. The Lord Jesus was crucified on the day of the Passover, the fourteenth day of that month (Exo. 12:6; John 18:28). According to the sacred calendar, He was crucified in the first month; according to the civil calendar, He was crucified in the seventh month — the very month the ark rested on the mountain. The Lord was crucified on the fourteenth day and resurrected three days later, on the seventeenth day. Thus, according to the sacred calendar, Christ resurrected on the first month and seventeenth day; according to the civil calendar, on the seventh month and seventeenth day — the exact same date the ark rested on Ararat. Therefore, this early type already reveals the precise day of Christ’s resurrection, which is truly marvelous.
1 Peter 3:20–21 links Christ’s resurrection with the ark: “During the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water. Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you… through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.” The water that typifies baptism saves us through resurrection. The ark resting on the mountaintop signifies Christ resurrecting from the waters of death; both events occurred on the same month and day. The number of people in the ark was eight. The number eight signifies resurrection, for a week has seven days, and the start of a new week — the first day — is the eighth day. Christ resurrected on the first day of the week, the eighth day (John 20:1). Thus, eight signifies resurrection. In this new life, men live in resurrection, and everything they do is in resurrection.
