The Way to Escape Death– Walking with God – Heb. 11:5-6
Do you hope to be raptured? If so, you need to walk with God. We should not only call on the Lord’s name, but also walk with God. Calling must be followed by walking. To walk with God means not going beyond God, not being self-assuming, not doing things according to our own concepts and preferences, and not doing anything apart from God. Walking with God is to take God as our center and our everything, doing things according to His revelation and leading, and doing everything together with Him. This is not merely living for God or doing things for God, but living and acting according to God and with God. Enoch walked with God in this way — he lived and acted according to God and with God. He did not follow his own preferences or concepts, nor the trends of his age.
Let me ask you: was it God who walked with Enoch, or Enoch who walked with God? The Bible does not say that God walked with Enoch, but that Enoch walked with God. For us to walk with God, we must be with God. In our thoughts, preferences and choices, we must be one with Him. I have pointed out that walking with someone is not easy. Suppose I walk with you, yet I have a different opinion from yours. I may say, “Brother, I love you, I want to walk with you. But please don’t take that road — turn to this road instead. I don’t want to take that way.” If I say this, I am not walking with you, but arguing with you. This is exactly what many lovers of the Lord Jesus do. They say, “Lord, I love You, I want to follow You, I want to walk with You.” But when the actual moment comes, many do not walk with the Lord but argue with Him.
To walk with the Lord implies many things: to deny yourself, to deny your own thoughts and preferences, and to deny everything that comes out of yourself. It implies that you hand yourself over to Him, that you are willing to submit to Him, allowing Him to lead you. This is not merely a matter of calling on the Lord’s name. To call, “O Lord Jesus,” is wonderful and enjoyable, but what follows after calling? When the Lord says, “Follow Me,” will you follow? Will you walk with Him? Never forget: calling was discovered in Genesis chapter four, but walking is revealed in Genesis chapter five. If after calling we do not go on to walk, then our calling is not so genuine. Later we will see that after walking there is also building. Enosh called, Enoch walked and Noah walked and built. We have to go on from Genesis chapter four — progressing from calling to walking.
