God’s Judgement on the Serpent and His Promise to Man – Gen. 3:14

When God came to Adam and Eve, He asked them questions — not to condemn them, but to lead them to confess their sins. However, when God turned to the serpent, He asked nothing. He immediately pronounced judgment upon the serpent, saying, “Because you have done this, cursed are you more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field. On your belly you will go, and dust you will eat all the days of your life.” God declared His judgment on the serpent because it had tempted Adam and Eve and caused them to sin against God. To go on its belly and to eat dust all the days of its life was certainly a curse for the serpent. By judging the serpent in this way, God limited Satan’s activity to the earth — he could no longer move freely. God also restricted the serpent to eat dust. Dust became its only food. It could not operate above the ground, nor eat anything other than dust.

This judgment upon the serpent is a gospel to man. First, since the serpent is limited to the earth, we can transcend him. As long as we rise above the earthly realm, the serpent — the devil, Satan — cannot touch us. When we live above all things, we overcome Satan. Second, the serpent is allowed to eat dust only and nothing else. Man was made from dust; our soul and body are of the earth, but our spirit is not. Our fallen body and soul are food for Satan, but our spirit is not. Whenever we live according to the flesh, we become a delicacy to Satan; whenever we are soulish, we also become food for the devil. But whenever we turn to our spirit, forgetting the body and soul, Satan has nothing to feed on. The moment we turn to the spirit, Satan is restricted.

Satan often uses various circumstances to disturb us, drawing us into our mind so that we cannot turn back to our spirit, and thus are tempted to sin — such as feeling resentful when scolded by parents or teachers, stirring up mischief with classmates, criticizing teachers behind their backs, or being influenced by peers to indulge in worldly pleasures. In such times, we must not remain in the flesh or the soul but must exercise our spirit and say to Satan, “Satan, I am in the third heaven. You cannot touch me or devour me, but I can trample you under my feet.” Then the devil not only cannot touch us — we will trample him underfoot. Since the serpent has already been limited to the earth, we can easily trample him. Praise the Lord! God has already restricted Satan’s activity and his food.
