The River of Life – Gen. 2:10

In the Garden of Eden, there was not only the tree of life, but also a river that flowed with it. Since the tree was the tree of life, the river must also be related to life. This river flowed out from Eden and divided into four branches, spreading in all directions to water the garden and cause it to bring forth life. At the end of the Bible, we also see a river of life flowing and a tree of life growing. At both the beginning and end of the Bible, we see the tree of life and a river flowing with living water. Man receives God as life, enjoys God’s richness, is quenched, nourished, grows and rejoices — all through the river. This river is for watering the garden, so it may bring forth life. It surely also quenches man’s thirst and keeps him alive. All this tells us that this river causes life to flow.

This river is not just one stream — it divides into four. This means the river flows from God as the source and center to reach men in all directions. The first river is named Pishon, which means “flowing freely” This flow comes at no cost; it flows freely to nourish all living things (cf. Eze. 47:9, 12). The second river is Gihon, which means “the bursting forth of waters,” describing a torrent-like, abundant flow. The third river is Tigris, which means “swift,” implying power. It tells us that this water of life is full of power, reaching wherever men live. The fourth river is Euphrates, meaning “fragrant,” making things fertile and fruitful. This flowing of the water of life makes us fragrant, fertile and full of fruit.

For our physical life, we must drink enough water to maintain the circulation of blood. The flow of our physical life depends on water. In the same way, day by day, we must drink the water of life to maintain the divine life flowing within us. If you receive the Lord Jesus into you, you will immediately feel something refreshing you from within. Every time we pray to the Lord and receive Him, the living water flows and refreshes us inwardly. After a long day of attending classes at school, we may return home exhausted and thirsty. At such a time, if we pray-read a verse of the Lord’s Word or sing a hymn, the living water begins to flow within us. This flow flushes out much of the old things in us, refreshes us, and brings the source of the Lord’s living water into us for our enjoyment. This flow also makes us fragrant and fruitful.
