On the Negative Side – Dealing with Satan – Heb. 2:14
Abolishing the Devil who Holds the Power of Death — Christ’s death abolished the devil who holds the power of death (Heb. 2:14). Satan is the source of death; he is the one who wields the authority of death. Judging the world and casting out the ruler of this world — Through His death on the cross, Christ judged the world and cast out Satan, the ruler of this world (John 12:31; Gal. 6:14). The world belongs to Satan. It is his kingdom and his possession. Christ’s death on the cross judged the Satan-possessed world and cast out Satan, the ruler of the world.
Stripping the Rulers and Authorities Among the Rebellious Angels — When Christ died on the cross, He fulfilled a work: He stripped the evil angelic rulers and authorities among the rebellious angels, made a public display of them, and triumphed over them through the cross. When Christ was crucified, there were two scenes: one visible and one invisible. The disciples saw the Roman soldiers crucify Christ’s physical body, saw Him suffer and die on the cross — that was the visible scene. Behind that visible scene, there was an invisible one. Humans could not see it, but the angels could. In that invisible realm, Christ stripped off the rebellious angels — the rulers and authorities in the air — who came to trouble Him. While Christ was being crucified, He was not only suffering physically under the hands of Roman soldiers, but in the unseen realm, He was also being harassed by the fallen angelic rulers and authorities in the air. Christ stripped them off like a person takes off a garment. Though humans could not see this invisible scene, all the angels — both good and evil — witnessed it. Christ triumphed over these rebellious angels by means of the cross.
Satan has a kingdom that spans the air, the earth and the water. In the air, Satan has angels; on earth, he has fallen men; in the water, he has demons (Eph. 2:1–2; Matt. 8:31–32; 12:43–44). Satan rules as king over this kingdom. In the air he has his subordinates, on the earth he has his subjects, and in the water he has his evil servants — the demons. This again shows us that behind the visible realm is an invisible realm. That is why nightclubs and many criminal entertainment venues are so appealing to fallen men. Behind such things lies an unseen world of fallen angels and demons.
