Shem and Japheth Blessed Covering Their Father – Gen. 9:23; 26-27
When Noah learned what Ham had done, he cursed Ham and blessed Shem and Japheth: “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant. May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.” History tells us that Noah’s curse and blessing were fulfilled under God’s governmental dealings. Shem, Noah’s firstborn, migrated eastward and became the ancestor of the Hebrews — the Jewish people. God is the God of Shem, and all things related to God come from the Jews. Everything concerning God, the gospel, Christ and salvation comes from the Jews. Japheth, Noah’s third son, migrated westward and became the ancestor of Europeans. History shows that Europeans indeed expanded. In the past five centuries, Europeans have continually grown in politics, science, art, technology and commerce. Europeans also migrated to the Americas, and Americans became an extension of Europeans. Eventually, European culture spread throughout the world through America, fulfilling the prophecy of Japheth’s enlargement. Yet Japheth had to dwell in Shem’s tents, meaning that although Europeans (including Americans) are strong, they need to believe in the God of the Jews; otherwise, they have no tent and no rest.
Why was Ham cursed? Because he violated God’s authority and touched God’s government. If Ham had considered his own position and God’s government, he would not have exposed his father to his brothers. Because he despised God’s government, he lost blessing. In contrast, Shem and Japheth recognized and respected God’s government. They would not even look at their father’s nakedness. What they did was not only proper and moral but fully under God’s government. In the family, parents are authorities established by God. Although they may sometimes be weak or fail, they can still strongly represent God’s government. Therefore, children should honor their parents. More broadly, all delegated authorities established by God on earth — teachers, elders and those in responsible positions — should be obeyed and respected. We must not criticize them lightly but should guard our position to avoid offending God’s government.
