Living a Life of Building Altars and Offering Sacrifices – Gen. 8:20

After Noah and his family came out of the ark, they began a new living. The first thing Noah did after leaving the ark was to build an altar and offer burnt offerings of every clean animal and bird to God. Jehovah smelled the satisfying fragrance and said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground on account of man, …and I will never again destroy every living thing.” Noah’s offering satisfied God. As a result, God caused the curse to be removed and brought blessing to the earth. As long as the earth remained, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night would never cease. God also blessed Noah and his sons and told them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” God again gave Noah and his sons the right to rule the earth, to govern all living creatures — animals, birds, creeping things and fish — and gave living animals to them as food, just as He had given green plants (Gen. 8:20–9:7).

The altar is a type of the cross of Christ, and the offerings typify Christ in various aspects. In the church life, we need to learn how to experience Christ and offer the Christ we have experienced to God for His enjoyment. This is well pleasing to Him. When we offer Christ through the cross, it removes the curse and brings blessing to the earth. Today people on the earth are not living properly before God; therefore, they live under a curse. However, in the church, by living a life of offering, we live under God’s blessing. This blessing includes seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night. Seedtime and harvest refer to sowing and reaping. In the church life, when we preach the gospel and sow Christ into others, God blesses us with the fruit of the gospel — a rich harvest. Cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night are all relative and are for the body’s health. Cold and winter deal with Satan; nighttime is for sleep and rest; heat, summer and daytime are for God. This is blessing. A proper church life brings physical health, a clear mind, balanced emotion, and God’s blessings — peace, joy, love, compassion and kindness — signs of the blessing of life. Such a church life also brings man back to God’s original intention: to express Him and represent Him, exercising His authority to rule the earth.
