Building the Ark (3)– Gen. 6:14
The Material of the Ark — Gopher Wood
The ark was made of gopher wood (Gen. 6:14). What is gopher wood? It is a type of cypress tree, saturated with resin; this resinous wood can resist water. Wood without resin cannot resist water intrusion. Gopher wood can resist the invasion of the flood. Song of Songs 1:17 speaks of cedar trees and fir trees (translated as pine trees in some versions). Fir trees and cypress trees are very similar. Almost all good translations render the Hebrew word for fir tree as cypress. In typology, especially in the Song of Songs, the cedar tree typifies the resurrected Christ. The resurrected Christ is the cedar tree that grows on the peak of Mount Lebanon. The cypress tree typifies the crucified Christ. The crucified Christ can resist the waters of death. He tasted death, and death had no power over Him. The ark was made of gopher wood; it went through the flood. Although repeatedly struck by the flood, it was not damaged. This signifies that Christ as the crucified One is solid. Christ is the true gopher wood, the true cypress, full of resin, strong to resist all floods. The flood of death cannot harm Him.
The Ark Covered with Pitch Inside and Out
Christ is not only the crucified One, but also the One whose blood covers us, delivering us from the penalty of sin. Therefore, the ark was covered with pitch inside and out. In Hebrew, the word for pitch has the same root as atonement, meaning to cover. The cover on the ark of testimony, also called the mercy seat, also comes from this same root. This shows that we have complete covering in Christ. We are all under His redemptive covering. Death cannot harm Him, so condemnation and judgment cannot come to us, because we are under the redemptive covering of Christ.
The pitch signifies the redemption of Christ, applied to the inside and outside of God’s building. What is applied inside is for us to see, and what is applied outside is for God to see. When the flood struck the ark, those inside the ark may have been frightened. But as long as they saw the pitch applied inside, they were at peace. The pitch inside the ark was for their peace. The pitch outside the ark was for God’s satisfaction, and also for Satan and the angels. This is a picture of the blood. Whenever we see the blood, we have peace. Whenever God sees the blood, He is satisfied. Whenever Satan sees the blood, he cannot attack.
