过程—运用魂
人虽然没有用他的灵，却用了他的魂，这表征由魂所代表的人出了头。许多时候，人不肯祷告或运用灵，反而代以思想、考虑和研究。他们觉得祷告很难，因为他们的心思太活跃，充满了许多思想。他们无法使心思安静下来。我们众人所要学习最好的功课，乃是叫我们的思想安静下来。
在堕落的过程中，夏娃用了她的魂。当她与蛇说话的时候，她的心思在讲理（创三2～3），然后她的情感喜悦知识树的果子（创三6），最后她的意志下了决心，决定摘取那果子吃（创三6）。我们的经历也是这样。当我们受某件事试诱时，我们的心思就讲理考量，我们的情感就被激动，喜欢这事，然后我们的意志就下决心。我们的心思、情感、意志是我们魂的三部分，都不是我们应该信靠的。
我们可以用购物为例。许多弟兄姊妹上街购物，看见某件想要的东西，就对自己讲理说，“我需要这东西，现在正在拍卖，价格很便宜，现在是我用低价买这件东西的惟一机会。”他越讲理由，这件东西就变得越宝贵。当你在讲理由的时候，那条小蛇就出现了，激动你的情感，加强你的意志，并且说，“去买那件东西。” 你当知道你就是在重复夏娃的历史。
过程—体行动
堕落过程的第三步是身体的行动。当灵被忽略，魂被运用，体就成了达到目的的奴仆。眼睛去看，手去拿，嘴去吃。我们在购物的时候，若撇下灵而用魂，身体就要带着我们上百货公司去。

The Process — Exercising the Soul
Although man did not use his spirit, he did use his soul. This signifies that the soul-represented man came to the forefront. Many times, men are unwilling to pray or exercise their spirit; instead, they rely on their own thinking, consideration and analysis. They find prayer difficult because their mind is overly active, filled with many thoughts. They simply cannot quiet their mind. One of the most important lessons we all need to learn is to quiet our thoughts.
In the process of the fall, Eve used her soul. When she spoke with the serpent, her mind began to reason (Gen. 3:2–3). Then, her emotion was stirred — she found the fruit of the tree of knowledge delightful (Gen. 3:6). Finally, her will made a decision — she chose to take and eat the fruit (Gen. 3:6). Our experience is often the same: when we are tempted by something, our mind starts reasoning and weighing, our emotion is moved to like it, and our will makes the decision. The mind, emotion and will are the three parts of the soul — and none of them are reliable.
Take shopping as an example. Many brothers and sisters go shopping and see something they want. Then they start reasoning: “I need this. It’s on sale. It’s really cheap. This is the only chance I have to get it at such a low price.” The more reasons they give themselves, the more valuable the item appears. While you are reasoning like this, the serpent shows up — stirring your emotion, strengthening your will, and whispering: “Go buy it!” You have to realize: you are repeating Eve’s history.
The Process — Bodily Action
The third step in the process of the fall is bodily action. When the spirit is neglected and the soul is in control, the body becomes the servant to carry out the goal. The eyes look, the hand takes and the mouth eats. When we go shopping and neglect our spirit, using our soul instead, the body will end up carrying us to the department store.
