试诱者
撒但有一个特别的名字，叫作“那试诱者”（太四3）。无论牠去那里，所行的就是试诱，因为这是牠的性情和本质。主耶稣说，牠是一个说谎者。“……因牠是说谎的，也是说谎者的父”（约八44）。
本身－“魔鬼”
在圣经中撒但被称为魔鬼（启十二9，二十2），这名字的意义是“毁谤者。”牠向人毁谤神，向神毁谤人。牠对夏娃所说的话含示着对神的毁谤。牠的毁谤永远是谎言。牠是藉着毁谤的谎言试诱人，牠试诱夏娃也是这样。
化身－“蛇”
当撒但接近夏娃的时候，牠非常的狡猾，假装着不是牠自己，而以化身出现。当主耶稣成为肉体的时候，是神成为人；虽然每一个人都能看见这个人，但很少人知道这个人就是神。在神成为肉体之前，撒但已先行动，使自己成为肉体。神是在约翰一章成为肉体；撒但是在创世记三章成为肉体。神所要作的许多事，撒但总是抢先用类似的方式来作。这样，在神成为肉体之前，撒但先化身成为狡猾的蛇。
那蛇是狡猾的，也就是说，是聪明的、灵巧的、诡诈的。我们对每一件狡猾的东西都得留心，对每一个聪明的人也都得留心，因为聪明的人常容易被那蛇利用。就外面说，人第一次堕落的原因是撒但。以后我们会看见，堕落的内在原因是人自己。

The Tempter
Satan has a special name: “the tempter” (Matt. 4:3). Wherever he goes, what he does is always temptation — because that is his nature and essence. The Lord Jesus said that he is a liar: “…for he is a liar and the father of it.” (John 8:44)
In Himself – “The Devil”
In the Bible, Satan is called the Devil (Rev. 12:9; 20:2), and this name means “accuser” or “slanderer.” He slanders God to man, and he slanders man to God. The words he spoke to Eve implied slander against God. His slanders are always lies. He tempts man by using slanderous lies — this was how he tempted Eve.
In Disguise – “The Serpent”
When Satan approached Eve, he was very cunning. He pretended not to be himself and appeared in a disguised form. When the Lord Jesus became flesh, it was God becoming man; although one could see the man, few knew that this man was God. Before God became flesh, Satan had already acted first by becoming flesh in a counterfeit way. God became flesh in John chapter 1; Satan became flesh in Genesis chapter 3. For many of the things God intends to do, Satan always tries to do something similar ahead of time. Thus, before God became flesh, Satan disguised himself as the cunning serpent.
The serpent was cunning, which means clever, crafty and deceitful. We must be cautious toward anything cunning and also toward anyone who are overly clever, because such clever people are often easily used by the serpent. Outwardly speaking, the reason for mankind’s first fall was Satan. Later, we will see that the inner cause of the fall was man himself.
