3. Life Flowing Out – Adam’s Rib Was Taken
At the end of Christ’s crucifixion, the Jews did not want the bodies of the criminals to remain on the cross during the Sabbath, so they asked Pilate to have their legs broken (John 19:31). When the soldiers came to Jesus to break His legs, they saw that He had already died, so there was no need to break His legs. This fulfilled the Scripture that says, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken” (John 19:32–33; Exo. 12:46; Num. 9:12; Psalm 34:20). However, one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water (John 19:34).
The blood was for redemption (Heb. 9:22; 1 Peter 1:18–19). But what does the water signify? In Exodus 17:6, we see a type of the smitten rock (1 Cor. 10:4). When the rock was struck, it was split open and living water flowed out. Likewise, Jesus on the cross was also struck by Moses’ rod — the rod representing God’s law. He was split open. His side was pierced, and out of it flowed water. This water signifies the flow of His divine life — the life that produces the church.
4. Resurrection – Adam Awoke
After God finished the work of producing Eve while Adam was in deep sleep, Adam awoke. Adam’s sleep typifies the death of Christ, and his awakening signifies the resurrection of Christ. After Adam awoke, he, along with Eve who came out of him, became another person. Just as Adam awoke from sleep and took Eve as his wife, Christ also rose from the dead and took the church as His counterpart.
