God Made a Helper for Adam – Gen 2:18
God created Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden, assigning him to cultivate and keep the garden. Although it was good and joyful for Adam to be in Eden, he was alone — he had no companion. Therefore, God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him.” Then God brought all the beasts of the field and the birds of the air to Adam. Adam gave names to them all. Yet among them, Adam found none that matched him — none that could be his helper. Although Adam had the wisdom to name every living creature, he could not find one among them that corresponded to him, that could complete him.
One day, God caused Adam to fall into a deep sleep. While he slept, God took one of his ribs and used it to build a woman. Then God brought the woman to Adam. When Adam awoke and saw Eve, he said, “This is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” Now Adam had found his other half. Just like a bean has two halves — together they form a complete bean, separated they are only halves. When Adam and Eve were united, they became one, a complete whole.
In Ephesians chapter 5, Paul quotes from Genesis 2: “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and should be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” Then he adds, “This is a great mystery, but I am speak with reference to Christ and the church.” (Eph. 5:31–32) The story of Adam and Eve is a picture foreshadowing God as the true universal Husband seeking a wife for Himself — that is, the church. Just as Adam was alone before Eve was made, so God was “alone” before gaining men. Although God is absolutely and eternally perfect, yet He is not complete. Without the church, He is like a husband without a wife, or a head without a body. So Adam needing a wife typifies and illustrates that God needs a counterpart. Only the church — regenerated by Christ and living by Christ — can match Christ and be His complement. Today, we are that chosen people — regenerated by Christ and living by Him — becoming His corporate counterpart and bride.
