Always Carrying about in the Body the Dying of Jesus – 2 Cor. 4:10

Here, “putting to death” means being killed — it refers to the work of death, the work of the cross, which the Lord Jesus suffered and passed through. While on earth, the Lord was daily under this putting to death; He experienced being put to death day by day. The apostles also experienced this; they were under the killing work of the cross daily and were continually being put to death. The apostles underwent this putting to death “so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.” The killing of the cross results in the manifestation of resurrection life. This daily putting to death serves the purpose of releasing God’s life in resurrection.

The ongoing daily grinding has a specific purpose — that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our body. This life is the life of resurrection. Even before the crucifixion, the Lord Jesus lived out the resurrection life. What He lived on earth was a life of resurrection. This resurrection life is able to withstand the putting to death. Paul continues in verse 11: “For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” In verses 10 and 11, the use of the name “Jesus” implies that the life the apostles lived was just like the life Jesus lived on earth. It was a life under the killing of the cross so that the resurrection life could be manifested.

Verse 12 says, “So death works in us, but life in you.” When we are under the killing of the Lord’s death, His resurrection life is imparted into others through us. The imparting of life to others always comes as a result of us receiving the killing of the cross. In verse 12, Paul is essentially saying, “We are being put to death, but you Corinthians are living. Our dying results in life being poured into you, so that you may live. To us, it is a putting to death; to you, it is the impartation of life.” Paul did not mind suffering because he knew that if he were put to death, life would be imparted to many. This was the life the apostles lived — a crucified life, through the surpassing power of the treasure within the earthen vessel, manifesting the life of resurrection.
