A Crucified Life for the Manifestation of the Resurrected Life – 2 Cor. 4:8-9
Beginning from verse 8 of 2 Corinthians chapter 4, we see that the apostles did not live a life of outward glory, but rather a crucified life. To live a crucified life is to live a life of being ground and crushed — like grain placed beneath a millstone to be pressed and broken. When the Lord Jesus was on earth, He lived such a life of crushing. His mother, His brothers, all of His disciples, and those who opposed and persecuted Him were like grinding stones to Him. To grind grain, two stones are needed: one is the lower, stationary stone and the other is the upper, rotating stone. For the crushing process to be accomplished, the upper stone need to work together in coordination with the lower stone.
If you read the four Gospels, you will see that those who caused the Lord Jesus to experience crushing were often those closest to Him. When the Lord faced opposition, He was still full of joy. But one day, while He was preaching to the crowds, His relatives thought He was out of His mind (Mark 3:21). At one point, the Lord even asked, “Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?” (Matt. 12:48). Then He answered, “For whoever does the will of My Father who is in the heavens, he is My brother and sister and mother” (Matt. 12:50).
- Afflicted in every way, yet not crushed.“Afflicted in every way,” or “pressed on every side.” Verses 8 to 18 describe the apostles’ life, showing that they lived a crucified life in resurrection — or under the killing of the cross — to manifest the life of resurrection, for the sake of fulfilling their ministry.
- Perplexed, but not despairing.“Despairing” implies being utterly at a loss, with every way shut off. Here the apostle says they were perplexed — they could not find a way out — but they were not in utter despair. They still had a way forward.
- Persecuted, but not forsaken. The first part of verse 9 says, “Persecuted, but not forsaken.” “Persecuted” may also be rendered “pursued by enemies.” “Forsaken” can also be translated “abandoned” or “rejected.” Literally, it means “left behind” in a harsh situation.
- Struck down, but not destroyed. The second part of verse 9 says, “Struck down, but not destroyed.” “Cast down” could also be rendered “cast down.” “Destroyed” here is the same word as in verse 3, meaning “put to death.”
