On the Negative Side – Dealing with Ordinances – Eph. 2:15
Abolishing the Ordinances of the Law
Through His death, Christ abolished the ordinances in order to create the two peoples — the Jews and the Gentiles — into one new man in Himself, thus making peace (Eph. 2:15; Col. 2:14). Among the Jews, the primary ordinances were the keeping of the Sabbath, circumcision and dietary regulations. The Jewish religion was built upon these three pillars. These became strong dividing elements, separating the Jews from all the Gentiles.
Moreover, every different culture has its own set of ordinances. The Japanese and Chinese have their particular ordinances. People in Texas have theirs, and so do those in the northern states of the U.S. Yet all these ordinances have been nailed to the cross. The middle wall of partition — the dividing wall — has been broken down through Christ’s death. Now, regardless of our race or culture, we can be one in Christ.
If we still hold on to all these ordinances, we can never become the one new man. How can Chinese and Japanese, or white and Black people, become one new man? They can be one new man because Christ has abolished all ordinances and crucified all natural men on the cross. Now in the new man, only Christ has the position. In the new man, Christ is all and in all (Col. 3:11).
Abolishing the Enmity Between Jews and Gentiles
Through His all-inclusive death, Christ abolished the enmity between Jews and Gentiles, reconciling both in one Body to God (Eph. 2:16). He created the two into one new man and reconciled both in one Body. This one new man is the same as the one Body. The church is the Body of Christ, which requires Christ as its life; the church is also the new man, which requires Christ as its person. Concerning the new man, the person is Christ; concerning the Body, the life is the Spirit. Christ and the Spirit are one, and the new man and the Body are also one. All separations have been crucified on the cross, and we have been reconciled to God in one Body.
