Stirring Man’s Heart to Desire (6) – Prov. 21:1

Desire Is the Key Issue

All who know how to preach the gospel begin by giving the sinner a few words to place into his mind. Then, they use further words to pry him open, to stir up desire. After that, they invite him to believe, urge him to believe. In this way, the person is turned. Matthew 13:15 speaks of three matters: “lest,” “understand,” and “turn.” “Understand” pertains to the mind, “Lest” points to desire, “Turn” relates to the will. Why don’t people understand? Because they are afraid. Why don’t they see the light? Because inwardly, they do not want to. There usually isn’t a problem in a person’s understanding — the issue lies in the heart desire.

For someone’s mind to understand it, he must be willing to understand — he must want to understand. So this is a matter of the heart desire. Men are not saved simply because their hearts do not want it. If someone merely hears and understands the gospel but does not want it, then urging him to decide will still be useless. Thus, the greatest issue in evangelism is the matter of desire. Once a man’s heart inclines toward the Lord, the work of evangelism is nearly complete.

Proverbs says, “The king’s heart is like the channels of water in the hand of the Lord, he turns it wherever He wishes.” (Prov. 21:1). The most important thing in evangelism is to gain the man’s heart. Once the heart is won, everything else follows naturally. We have to labor in study and learning — and also rely on the Holy Spirit to give us the right words: words that have hooks. If our words are like hooks that can draw out a man’s desire and gain his heart, then the gospel work has succeeded.
