How to Awaken a Sense of Sin in Men (4) – Luke 15:20-21

5. Concerning Sin as an Offense Against God Himself

When a man sins, it is not only an offense against God’s law – it is an offense against God Himself. The previous point showed that sin offends God’s law and commandments, but this point emphasizes that sin hurts God’s heart. In Luke chapter 15, the prodigal son clearly sinned outwardly. But when he came to his senses, he didn’t list his specific sins. Instead, he planned to say to his father, “I have sinned against heaven and against you.” The phrase “against you” shows that he recognized he had sinned against a father – he had hurt his father’s heart, turned away from his father’s love, rejected his father’s protection and scorned his father’s tears. The previous point focused on sin as a violation of God’s laws, government and ordinances. This point, however, reveals that sin is a direct offense against God’s own person, against His love, His protection and His grace. To depart from God is the greatest sin of all.

The story of the prodigal son is one of the best in the Bible and has brought salvation to countless people. The son never described what sins he had committed; he only resolved in his heart to say to his father, “I have sinned against you.” He did not become a prodigal because he committed sins, he became a prodigal the moment he left his father. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). It is as if God’s love for the world even surpasses His love for His only Son. In terms of love, God is the Father of human beings. His relationship with the world seems to transcend even that with His only Son. When the world sins, does it not hurt the heart of the heavenly Father? Some people still believe that God is unwilling to save, and that He takes pleasure in the death and condemnation of sinners. Such thinking offends the love of God and constitutes the greatest sin, because it misrepresents the very heart of God.
