How to Awaken a Sense of Sin in Men (3) — Psa. 51:4

4. Concerning Sin as an Offense Against God’s Law

A person may feel that pride is a sin, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they feel that pride is an offense against God. To the average person, committing a sin is one thing, and offending God is another. But for a Christian, committing sin and offending God are the same thing. For example, when we wrong a brother, we feel that we have also wronged God. But to unbelievers, committing sin has nothing to do with offending God. Yet the Bible shows us that when David committed the sins of adultery and murder, he saw that the One he had truly offended was God. He recognized that he had not merely sinned, but had sinned against God (Psa. 51:4). Therefore, if a person only feels guilty about committing sin but doesn’t realize that their sin is an offense against God, they fall short of being a true Christian. The Lord is above all. All earthly authority and each personal relationship originates from Him.

So when I offend another man, I am ultimately offending Him. For example, if I own ten dogs and ten sheep, and a dog bites and kills a sheep, the dog has not just wronged the sheep, it has also offended me, its master. Unbelievers may recognize something as a sin, but they don’t understand it as an offense against God. Many Christians also only recognize sin itself, without seeing it as an offense against God. This kind of shallow salvation often leads to problems later on. In this regard, very few Chinese have proper understanding. That is why we have to ask God to do a deeper work. Only when someone has a deep enough sense of sin can they come to see that sin is not just wrongdoing – it is an offense against God. When we preach the gospel, we need to always bring the listener to this point: not only to recognize that they have sinned, but also to see that their sin is against God, which is a crucial point in preaching the gospel.
