How to Create a Sense of Need (2) — John 4:13-14

For this point, you can use John 4:13–14: “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst. But the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” There are certain men who always feel unsatisfied and find life to be vain. A person’s possessions may increase, but their satisfaction does not. Money, children and friends – none of these can truly satisfy a person.

The world is always in vain. When people don’t yet have something, they desire it. But once they get it, they soon thirst again. Before men have the Lord, they constantly seek satisfaction. But even if they feel satisfied for a short time, it quickly fades, and they thirst again. It’s just like children – when they don’t have a toy, they want it; but once they have it, they soon lose interest. Everything the world offers only provides temporary satisfaction. Whoever drinks of it will thirst again. This is just like the Samaritan woman, who had already had five husbands and was still not satisfied. Just as the Lord Jesus said: “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again!”

After sharing this passage, you should invite brothers to testify that after believing in the Lord, it was like drinking living water – they experienced true inner satisfaction and were no longer thirsty. When you use this approach to preach the gospel, you are helping people realize their need for joy and satisfaction. You help them see that others have joy, but they themselves do not. Then they will begin to feel a need. When we place joyful men among those who lack joy, the latter will begin to envy that joy. This is how we should preach the gospel. But we ourselves must first be well supplied – we must first drink the living water from the Lord and gain joy, so that others may feel their own need.
