Creating a Sense of Needin Sinners – 2 Cor. 4:4
The human heart is more deceitful than anything else; it is completely dark and utterly unwilling to seek God. Fallen man has absolutely no heart for God. This is what the Bible testifies from the very beginning. A fallen sinner is entirely of this world and completely of sin; therefore, he has no affection for God’s word. Thus, when we preach the gospel to sinners, our primary purpose is not to have them understand the gospel. Our first purpose in preaching the gospel is to have people grasp one or two words from God and thereby create in them a sense of need. We are not merely telling people the story, truth or message of salvation. The purpose of preaching the gospel is to cause sinners to develop a feeling of needing the gospel; not merely to have them understand it or to study the doctrine thoroughly. Because even if a person intellectually knows and understands the gospel, he may still feel no need for God Himself.
Two Senses Necessary for a Sinner to Be Saved
For a sinner to be saved, two senses are essential: a sense of need and a sense of sin. Therefore, the fundamental method of those who preach the gospel must be to arouse in people a sense of need and also to cause them to feel their sinfulness. When the Lord preached the gospel to the Samaritan woman, He did not first cause her to see the gospel, nor did He first cause her to see her sin; rather, He first caused her to feel her need. She came to draw water because she was thirsty, and the Lord Jesus used this outward thirst to speak of an inward thirst. The Lord continually impressed upon the woman her sense of need, so much so that she said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty” (John 4:15). But the Lord did not immediately give her the living water; instead, He first asked her to call her husband. This next step brought her to a sense of sin. The Lord Jesus, with great wisdom, first used water to generate in her a sense of need, and then used her husband to generate in her a sense of sin, thus leading her to salvation. Every gospel preacher needs to at least once carefully study all the words about gospel preaching in the New Testament to find out the principles of preaching the gospel.
