Four Commissions to Be Filled Through Gospel Preaching (3)
3. Living the Body Life: Preaching the Gospel Through Church Coordination to Practically Live Out the Body Life – Col. 1:13
We not only need to stand firm in one spirit to experience Christ, but we also need to strive together with one soul for the faith of the gospel. Striving together for the gospel is more difficult than standing firm in one spirit. This requires us, after being regenerated in our spirit, to go further and experience transformation in our soul, especially in our mind, which is the leading and primary part of our soul.
In Philippians 1:27, Paul exhorts the Philippians to stand firm in one spirit and to strive together with one soul. The Bible only uses the words “spirit” and “soul” together in this passage. When it comes to standing firm, we must stand firm in one spirit; when it comes to striving together, we must be of one soul. We need to exercise both our spirit and our soul. We exercise our spirit to stand firm, and we exercise our soul to strive together for the faith of the gospel. The word “strive” here implies contending, laboring and working through spiritual warfare.
We must realize that standing firm in one spirit and striving together with one soul is crucial. It is also important to distinguish between the prepositions “in” and “with.” We stand in one spirit, and we strive with (literally, “with one soul”) for the gospel. We stand firm before God, but we strive together before men. Before God, we must stand firm as a testimony, and before men, we must strive together with one soul.
In fact, according to the grammatical structure of verse 27, standing firm in one spirit and striving together with one soul are not two separate matters. Paul is not exhorting the Philippians to first stand firm in one spirit and then to strive together with one soul. Instead, he exhorts them to “stand firm in one spirit, striving together with one soul”. Paul’s wording indicates that to stand firm, we must strive. In reality, striving is part of standing firm. We stand firm in one spirit by striving together with one soul.
