Whole Household Saved (5) — Acts: 16:31-33

The Jailer’s Household (Continued)

Throughout the entire Old Testament, God dealt with people by households. Likewise, in the New Testament, God also deals with people by households. The household is the smallest unit – you cannot reduce it any further. If a person can believe in the Lord Jesus and their entire household is saved, this is truly a marvelous thing. I do not know the reason, but this is what the Lord has said. The Old Testament and the New Testament are the same in this principle – they both recognize the household as the unit of salvation.

The church in Philippi began with this jailer. Paul said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” Acts 16:34 says, “He brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household.” Here you can see how wonderful this is. At first, the promise was given only to the jailer – no one else had heard it. “Believe in the Lord Jesus, you and your household will be saved.” Later, the jailer brought his whole family to listen to Paul’s words. After hearing, they were all baptized. Then the jailer took Paul and his companions into his home and prepared a meal for them. He and his entire household rejoiced because they had believed in God. Therefore, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, you and your household will be saved” is not a difficult matter. The apostle gave a promise to the jailer, and the result was that his entire household was saved. Each one listened, each one was baptized and rejoiced. If the apostles had said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved. After a few days, once you have been saved, we will teach you some doctrines so that you can gradually testify to your family, allowing them to slowly come to faith and be saved over time,” then when would the jailer’s household ever have been saved? But this was not how the apostles preached the gospel. They did not approach it one by one – they preached by households. They declared, “You and your household will be saved.” You must see before God that saving one person is salvation, and saving an entire household is also salvation. Do not lose this right! Bring your whole family, and they will be saved.
