The Vanity of Life – Eccl. 1:2

God’s Powerful Salvation

The Bible is not merely a classic; it is the most explicit and clear record of God’s salvation. The Bible tells us that the gospel of God is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Rom. 1:16). Our experiences also confirm that the Lord’s salvation is truly wondrous. It not only saves people to pass out of death into life but also becomes everything to them, allowing them to receive all kinds of blessings from Him. Furthermore, the Bible reveals that for all who come to trust in the Lord Jesus, He is able to save them forever and keep them from stumbling. We can indeed testify that the Lord has delivered us from all kinds of suffering, granting us the joy, blessing, and peace of His life.

The Vanity of Life

Each of us, to some extent, has tasted the flavor of life. From even a bit of life experience, we can deeply feel that life is filled with various sorrows and pains. The most heartbreaking and tragic reality, however, is that the end of life is vanity. No matter what accomplishments, status or pleasures one attains in this world, the ultimate result remains vanity of vanities. Some people, after achieving great success, seem satisfied with what they have. Yet when the moment passes, they feel vanity of vanities. Some are busy and appear deeply engaged in their activities, but when the busyness is over, in moments of quiet, they feel vanity of vanities. Others, while striving and working hard, seem fulfilled, but upon accomplishing their goals, they too feel vanity of vanities. As the Bible says in Ecclesiastes, all is like chasing shadows or grasping the wind.

We can all distinctly sense a void deep within us, along with an inexplicable need. Why is life so vanity? Why does everything in life leave us with a feeling of emptiness? What exactly is that deep need within us? Simply put, the reason people feel empty is that they lack God within. The reason life’s matters cannot satisfy and leave people feeling empty is that they are not the true meaning of life. Only God is the true meaning of life. Therefore, when a person lacks God, life has no meaning, and naturally, they feel vanity of vanities.

The Meaning and Purpose of Life

The phrase “everything has its use” implies that every object has a specific purpose. Whether it’s an electric fan, a microphone, an organ, a piano, the lights above us, or the chairs we sit on, each item serves a particular function. Now, let us consider: what is the purpose of human beings? Why do we exist in the universe? We all agree that life is not about being a clothes rack or a food container, satisfied merely by dressing well and eating our fill. Deep within, we sense an indescribable feeling – this mysterious, profound feeling tells us that life ought to have a higher meaning. But what is this higher meaning of life? Many philosophers have spent their entire lives researching this question, writing numerous books to answer it. Yet, experience shows that their answers fail to satisfy the deep requirements of our inner being.
